Chest & Sinus Infections
Chest infections (e.g. bronchitis, pneumonia) are characterized by symptoms of coughing (with or without mucus), tight chest and wheezing. Physiotherapy treatment is extremely effective in relieving all of the above mentioned symptoms by facilitating:
· Mucus expectoration through the use of various techniques (chest percussion and vibrations, breathing exercises,
positioning the patient in optimal drainage positions for the affected lung segments, and inhalation of medications which
reduce the viscosity of secretions)
· Relief of breathing difficulty through the inhalation of bronchodilatory medication. Often effective mucus expectoration is
sufficient to clear up wheezing.
Treatment is indicated as much for adults as for babies/children as both groups suffer the same symptoms. These are often impossible to relieve at home.
Immediate commencement of physiotherapy, simultaneously with prescribed medication (e.g. antibiotics), speeds up the recovery process dramatically.
Sinus infections present with a blocked nose, thick secretions, headache, swollen or teary eyes and a general ill feeling. The treatment improves and resolves these symptoms through the use of various modalities (e.g. Photizo Light Therapy) and techniques which include Cranio-Sacral therapy and neck joint mobilisation. This stimulates drainage of secretions and relieves the headache.
